The sky was covered with a thin haze causing halos around bright stars like beta Andromedae at the bottom of the picture

The visible length of the tail is 8 degrees on this foto! The comet had a close encounter with M31, the Andromeda Galaxy, a couple of days earlier. The conditions were not perfect with some cirrus over the horizon illuminated by the omni-present sodium lights of the Netherlands. The picture has been processed significantly to remove the worst part of the skyglow
